Behavior Modification:
Busy work schedules, hectic lifestyles, and convenience are all a part of today’s society. It’s challenging finding the time and sometimes energy to take care of our health. Let's be honest here, most of us have been to a drive-thru for convenience reasons or have neglected to exercise on a daily basis. Perhaps the most challenging part of this obesity treatment program is changing your lifestyle and dietary behaviors permanently, especially if you grew up a certain way or are used to eating certain foods. Keep in mind, bariatric surgery provides an excellent tool for weight loss but how well you stick to the program and maintain a healthier lifestyle will determine your success.
It is important to understand that the surgery does not change your perception or emotional need for food. The surgeon does not operate on your brain so ultimately "You" will have to make the right decisions. As a Nutritionist, I will coach you through this process and help you understand the changes you will need to make. For starters, creating a food diary and keeping track of what you eat on a daily basis will help pinpoint areas of improvement. Print a food journal worksheet.
Energy Theory:
Energy In vs. Energy Out Theory
It is important to understand the concept of energy in vs. energy out. If we consume more calories than our bodies need than we will store these extra calories as fat and gain weight. Of course there are more parameters involved, such as metabolism, genetics and physical activity. For example, if your caloric needs are ~ 1800 calories per day and you are consuming 3000 calories/day then most likely you will gain weight over time unless your metabolism is very fast, which is possible. The goal is to maintain weight loss over time. After the surgery, your calorie intake will be significantly reduced to < 1000 calories, or even < 600 calories within the first month.

Understand how your body works! Two key components that influence body weight are:
1. Genetics
Lets face it not everyone is born with a fast metabolism. Some of us gain weight just staring at a french fry while others can eat a whole bag of them and never gain weight. Understanding the way our body works is an important part of losing weight. Start an exercise regimen to give your metabolism a boost!
2. Environment & Lifestyle
Have you heard the theory you are what you eat? Well, that’s not always true but what you eat and how often you exercise can reflect your body weight. Our nutritionist will help you implement a healthier lifestyle!
